History
Where the legend began
In the 6th century BC, Greek settlers from Gela and Rhodes founded the colony of Akragas. Blessed with a strategic position and formidable military strength, Akragas flourished in the 5th century BC, reaching an extraordinary era of power and splendor. It was during this golden age that many of the monuments that define the Valley of the Temples were built, from the Temple of Juno to the magnificent Temple of Concordia, one of the best-preserved Doric temples in the world, rivaled only by the Parthenon.
